ON THE OCTOBER 19 BALLOT
Alberta Shield

On October 19, Albertans are asked:

"Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"

Order in Council 110/2026 (March 31, 2026)

The Doors Open to Alberta

There are three categorically different acts Alberta could take. Each has its own legal route and its own feasibility. Conflating them is the central strategic trap.

01
Achievable Now

A Provincial Constitution

Alberta can do this alone. No permission needed. Simple majority in the Legislature. Codifies your rights, limits government power, entrenches direct democracy.

02
Requires Coalition

Reform Within Canada

Fix equalization, rebalance powers, reform the Senate. Requires 7 provinces representing 50% of Canada's population to agree.

03
Long Road

Independence

Lawful under the Secession Reference, but requires a clear referendum, negotiation with all parties, and resolution of Treaty obligations covering the entire province. A generational project with significant structural hurdles.

These are not points on a spectrum. They are different acts, requiring different coalitions. Conflating them is the trap.

Door 1 Is Open. Let's Walk Through It.

A Constitution That Actually Binds Your Government

This isn't a consolation prize. This is the thing that actually limits government power over your life.

Entrench Property Rights

So no legislature can quietly remove them through ordinary legislation.

Lock In Recall Elections

So MLAs answer to you, not party whips.

Require Referenda

Before major policy changes that affect your life.

Fiscal Transparency

Balanced budgets and spending limits that governments cannot override.

Free Expression

Protection from government overreach into speech, conscience, and digital life.

Ideas Already Being Discussed

These are not adopted positions. They are examples of what Albertans have proposed as starting points for a provincial constitution.
